Implementing WHO guidance on conducting and analysing vaccination coverage cluster surveys: Two examples from Nigeria

In 2015, the World Health Organization substantially revised its guidance for vaccination coverage cluster surveys (revisions were finalized in 2018) and has since developed a set of accompanying resources, including definitions standardized indicators software (named Vaccination Coverage Quality Indicators—VCQI) to calculate them.–The current WHO survey manual was used design conduct two nationally representative Nigeria–one assess routine immunization one measure post-measles campaign coverage. The primary analysis both conducted using VCQI. this paper, we describe those highlight some analyses that are facilitated by new resources. addition calculating each vaccine-dose age group, VCQI provide insight into several program quality such as crude versus valid doses, timeliness, missed opportunities simultaneous vaccination, and, where relevant, stratified parameters, number previous doses received. furnishes helpful ways visualize results. We show all vaccines is far below targets Nigeria especially low northeast northwest zones, which also have highest rates dropout vaccination. 2017 measles higher showed less geospatial variation than Nonetheless, substantial improvement performance implementation will be needed achieve disease control goals.
